A honeymoon in Japan offers you the chance to experience one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

While iconic sights like Tokyo's Shibuya Crossing or Kyoto's golden Kinkaku-ji are high atop everyone’s lists, some of the best experiences often found in lesser-known honeymoon places in Japan.

For newlyweds seeking a mix of romance, adventure & cultural immersion, many honeymoon destinations in Japan provide a wealth of opportunities to create unforgettable memories.

This guide will help you discover hidden gems and local adventures that will make your Japan honeymoon truly special.

1. Embracing Local Culture on Your Honeymoon in Japan

One of the most rewarding ways to experience Japan honeymoon spots is through embracing cultural aspects in art, religion, cuisine and much more.

Gold Leaf in Kanazawa

In Kanazawa, in the top tier for honeymoon destinations in Japan, couples can try their hand at gold leaf application, a craft the city is famous for.

Local artisans guide you through the delicate process of applying whisper-thin sheets of gold to lacquerware, creating a unique souvenir of your honeymoon. It's a meticulous process that requires focus and patience - qualities that serve well in marriage too.

Pro Tip: Book a private session for a more intimate experience. Some artisans offer evening classes, perfect for couples seeking a romantic activity after a day of sightseeing.

88-Temple Pilgrimage on the Island of Shikoku

For a more active cultural experience in a tremendous spot for your Japan honeymoon, head to the mountainous region of Shikoku.

Here, couples can embark on a portion of the famous 88-temple pilgrimage. Walking hand-in-hand through peaceful forests, visiting ancient temples & staying at local minshuku (family-run guesthouses) offers a glimpse into rural Japanese life rarely seen by tourists.

That’s because relatively few visitors make it to Shikoku – even though it’s a short extension for those who are already visiting Kyoto and Osaka (as most do on their Japan honeymoon).

Highlight: The stretch between temples 11 and 12 in Tokushima Prefecture offers beautiful coastal views and is manageable for most fitness levels.

Osaka Food Tours on Your Japan Honeymoon

, Osaka is the prime spot to take your taste buds on an adventure with a local Osaka food tour

… and other Osaka delicacies. The lively atmosphere & shared discoveries make for a fun & delicious date night.

2. Your Japan Honeymoon’s Off the Beaten Path Adventures

For couples seeking natural beauty away from the crowds, a honeymoon in Japan gives you the best of both worlds.

Iya Valley: Nature's Hidden Gem

Nestled in Tokushima Prefecture, the Iya Valley offers a hidden paradise as an ideal Japan honeymoon spot. The valley’s remote location has preserved much of its natural beauty and traditional way of life.

Known for its dramatic mountain scenery, traditional vine bridges & hot springs, this area of Shikoku island provides a perfect backdrop for romance. Stay in a restored thatched-roof farmhouse, soak in an outdoor hot spring onsen with valley views & explore hiking trails that lead to gorgeous waterfalls.

Must-Do Activities:

  1. Cross the kazurabashi (vine bridges), remnants of a time when locals needed quick escape routes

  2. Soak in a rotenburo (outdoor bath) overlooking the misty valley

  3. Stay in a renovated kominka (traditional farmhouse) for an authentic rural experience

If that sounds like your idea of a great honeymoon place in Japan, bucolic and largely unexplored Shikoku has plenty to offer you!

Winter not your thing? No worries! Hokkaido is a great year-round destination.

The vast array of nature here is truly amazing, from lavender fields and the famous Blue Pond, to iconic lakes such as Toya and Shikotsu. Zen Retreat on Mount Koya

Mount Koya, in Wakayama prefecture not far from the popular Japan honeymoon spots of Kyoto and Osaka, provides a lovely setting for couples seeking spiritual connection.

Temple Stay Experience:

  1. Participate in morning meditation sessions

  2. Try shakyo (sutra copying) for a meditative practice

Honeymoon with the Deer in Nara

In the historic city of Nara, home to Japan's first permanent capital,

For a different experience, you can take a guided night walk through Nara Park. As the crowds thin out, the magical atmosphere of the park comes alive. Watch the famous free-roaming deer settle down for the night, see the great Buddha of Todaiji illuminated & stroll through lantern-lit gardens. It's a romantic way to experience this ancient city.

Festivals: If you’re lucky enough to time your Japan honeymoon to visit Nara during one of the lantern festivals, it elevates the experience even further.

4. Seasonal Travel Advice for Your Honeymoon in Japan

Japan's distinct seasons offer unique experiences throughout the year.

Springtime: A Japan Honeymoon Delight

Kyoto and Tokyo draw crowds for cherry blossom season. While we’d suggest visiting one or both to see the sakura, it’s not the only show around.

Tohoku offers equally beautiful views with far fewer tourists (see the timing tip below).

Top Spring Spots in Tohoku:

  1. Hirosaki Castle (Aomori Prefecture): Over 2,600 cherry trees surround the castle and its moat

  2. Kakunodate (Akita Prefecture): A former samurai district with weeping cherry trees lining historical streets

  3. Kitakami Tenshochi Park (Iwate Prefecture): A 2km stretch along the river with 10,000 cherry trees

Timing Tip: Cherry blossoms in Tohoku typically bloom 2-3 weeks later than in Tokyo, usually peaking in late April to early May.

How’s Summer in Japan for a Honeymoon?

Summer brings the opportunity to climb Mount Fuji, Japan's iconic peak. While challenging, reaching the summit together & watching the sunrise from above the clouds is an unforgettable shared achievement. For a less strenuous option, enjoy the Fuji Five Lakes region, where you can camp by crystal-clear lakes with Fuji views.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about the weather here during the summer months. Much of Japan (though Hokkaido not so much) experiences a rainy season, from roughly early June through mid July. While it won’t necessarily rain all day every day, you’ll likely see a fair amount. The humidity and temperatures start to rise during the rainy season, and then get really intense from July through August and often into September. It’s not a dealbreaker for many travellers (judging by the numbers), but you can beat the heat by staying hydrated, spending ample time in restaurants, cafes, museums and other air-conditioned environments and generally pacing yourself.

Autumn: An Ideal Time for Your Japan Honeymoon

Autumn in Japan is spectacular, truly. You can catch fall foliage in many different parts of Japan.

The Kurobe Gorge in Toyama Prefecture offers one of the most dramatic displays of fall foliage. Ride the scenic railway through towering bridges & tunnels, stopping at open-air hot springs along the way. The brilliant reds & golds of the mountainsides create a romantic backdrop for your journey.

The timing varies from north to south, and in general autumn in Japan is experienced later than what you’d see in North America or Europe. The north starts to see color change in October and November, but popular destinations such as Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo can see autumn colors well into December.

Winter Honeymoons in Japan

Winter brings its own magic, especially in Hokkaido (as mentioned earlier) and in the Japanese Alps.

In Nagano Prefecture, visit the famous snow monkeys of Jigokudani, who soak in natural hot springs surrounded by snow. Nearby, the historic town of Shibu Onsen, with its nine public bathhouses, offers a cozy retreat for couples to enjoy rotenburo hopping in the crisp mountain air.

5. Artisanal Experiences on a Honeymoon in Japan

Japan's dedication to craftsmanship provides opportunities for couples to engage with traditional arts.

In the quiet town of Wajima on the Noto Peninsula, learn about the painstaking process of creating Wajima-nuri lacquerware. Some workshops offer multi-day courses where couples can create their own piece, a special souvenir to take home. Note that this area suffered major damage in an earthquake in January 2024, so check before planning a trip here as to the recovery updates.

For a more active artisanal experience, try indigo dyeing in Tokushima Prefecture, the birthplace of Japan's indigo industry.

  1. Tour an indigo farm to see how the plants are grown and processed

  2. Learn about different dyeing techniques at the Aizumi Ai no Yakata museum

  3. Create your own indigo-dyed items in a hands-on workshop

  4. Take home matching indigo-dyed yukata (light kimono) as a honeymoon souvenir

Now there’s a local Japanese experience you won’t forget!

In Yamanashi Prefecture, home to Japan's wine country, take a private tour of boutique wineries. Learn about the unique challenges & techniques of Japanese viticulture, taste locally produced wines & enjoy a romantic picnic in the vineyards with views of Mount Fuji in the distance.
